Ava was born in the late 1600's in Salem Massachusetts. She was born Sarah, but chose the name Ava, a shortened version of her surname, when she was 12 as an act of rebellion against her mother. Her father had died when she was a child of a sickness. This encouraged her to learn how to help people heal. It was uncommon for girls to get into medicine. Schools were few a far between and she wasn't welcome inside their walls. So she looked for a different way to learn. She found that natural herbs and potions worked wonders on the human body. She spend 10 years studying under a woman named Maredith, a strangely beautiful middle-aged lady who lived in the woods outside the town. Her mother told her she was dangerous, that she would teach Ava evil things. This did not sway Ava's ambitious mind.
Maredith was odd and only ever let Ava inside during the night. She said that the best remedies were made under the light of the moon.
When Ava was 24 she was known all around the town for her natural balms and mixtures. The younger, more open minded townspeople went to her for all kinds of problems; mental, physical, emotional, even spiritual. She had answers for all. She had learned well from Maredith and still visited her often. She was as beautiful as the day Ava had met her and Ava loved her more than she had ever loved another person. She had been more a mother than the one Ava left at home every night to visit her teacher and more of a friend than any other person her age. Ava didn't question that Maredith did not seem to have aged in the decade that she knew her.
In the year 1692, all hell broke loose. The town went crazy, blaming Ava and people like her of being witches. Maredith disappeared and Ava feared the worst. She hid in the woods for weeks as they hunted for her, shouting about the devil and carrying torches.
When Maredith found her, she was cold, starving, and scared. That night, Maredith changed Ava's life forever.
In the months following her change, Ava studied with Maredith and learned of the Mother Monster. She devoted herself to her god. She loved learning more ways to help and heal. She loved learning what could only be described as Magic.
She lived with Maredith for a hundred years, even after being released just 10 years into her kindredship. When Maredith was killed by hunters, Ava swore she would never let anyone else take what was hers. She has been hunting down and destroying hunters since then.
